What is SORBL? Spam Origin Realtime BlackList. So what is PSBL? Passive Spam BlockList.
SORBL uses various methods and data sources to create lists of IP addresses
that are suspected of being untrustworthy. These IP addresses may include:
- Compromised machines ("zombies") that send out spam.
- Open proxies that allow untrusted e-mail to pass through them.
- Systems that are sending spam on the Internet.
Email marketing companies may allow their users to purchase email lists or crawl for email addresses
on web pages. However, if the IP addresses associated with these activities are suspected of sending spam, they may be listed on SORBL or other spam blacklists.
The act of buying or crawling for email addresses itself is not necessarily illegal or against SORBL's policies. However, if the obtained emails are sent without consent and violate anti-spam laws or guidelines, the IP addresses associated with the email sender may be listed on SORBL or other spam blacklists.
It is crucial for email marketing companies to adhere to best practices and comply with anti-spam laws and guidelines to avoid being associated with spam and potentially listed on spam blacklists. This includes obtaining consent from recipients before sending them marketing emails and providing a clear and easy way for recipients to unsubscribe from future emails.
SORBL does NOT test for SMTP relays.
SORBL only lists individual IP addresses, it NEVER lists
ranges.
SORBL does NOT care whether an IP address is dynamic or not, if
connections the IP addresses makes sent unsolicited email, it is listed regardless.
SORBL does NOT attempt to associate IP addresses to persons or organizations.
SORBL does NOT accept external submissions for listing. Hence it is not possible for SORBL to be used as an instrument of revenge (eg: "disgruntled ex-employee" or "competitor").
SORBL does NOT attempt to list every possible spam source, but it does list spams which are not listed by
other reputable lists namely, zen.spamhaus.org, rbl.interserver.net, uribl.rspamd.com, bl.spamcop.net, b.barracudacentral.org and psbl.surriel.com.
SORBL does not list IP addresses that have invalid MX,
rDNS, non-rDNS record, or are already listed in other reputation lists. These IP
addresses are typically blocked at the SMTP level, and a properly configured MTA
(Mail Transfer Agent) should already have taken care of these issues.
SORBL operates in an entirely automated way so you can remove the listing yourself.
It's important to note that SORBL is just one of many spam blacklists available, and each list may have its own specific criteria and methods for identifying spam. It's always a good idea to check multiple
blacklists to get a more complete picture of an IP address's reputation.
